It seems it won't transfer copy protected game saves. Doing a little reading it seems these saves are locked to the specific PS3 console you played it on, which I think is a little weird. Yep i did check out the Ethernet cable connection method however I have 640 GB of data on the old PS3 and it approximated, it would take 5/6 days to transfer the data.

I did actually utilise this method with my first PS3 slim i bought however the (1st ps3 slim) died within a few days upon purchase (it was second hand). Now having purchased my second PS3 slim (also second hand) I was hoping for a quicker method as I have already manually installed most of my games now using disks and downloads (Bloody hard work by the way!) All I have left is the copy locked game saves that refuse to budge.

Yea i had that problem with burnout paradise and devil may cry 4. Got burnout paradise finished it 100% than my bluray drive desides to kick the bucket, so i do a full backup and send it for repairs. Once i got it back i could not use my save data so i started all over again for BP and DMC4. Than i got a YLOD like 2 weeks after i got it back, and had to start both games ALL OVER AGAIN! Than i had to start burnout paradise again for the trophies. God knows how many hours i have sunk into those games, just redoing what i have already done.
