IMindMap is a Mind Mapping software package produced by the team currently working closely with Tony Buzan, one of the world’s leading experts on the brain and thinking development and the originator of the Mind Map. If you do a search on Google for Mind Map software you will find there are literally hundreds of different Mind Mapping applications and as you would expect some are better than others, a few are quite extraordinary and there are a lot of half hearted attempts at transferring what started out as a hand drawn tool onto a computer. I will go into more detail on the topic elsewhere on this site but here is the executive summary of what Mind Mapping is: It is a graphical thinking tool that mirrors the way the brain structures and organizes information by using a radiant structure of colored branches that support or link keywords and images that are related to and summarize the key points of a central theme. The makers of iMindMap claim that it is the only official Mind Mapping software endorsed by Tony Buzan.

Whether or not this is an important factor remains to be seen because there is some excellent Mind Map software on the market that does not make that claim. This stance, whilst probably thought of as more of a marketing position than of being any practical benefit, is actually a reflection that iMindMap more closely resembles the extremely powerful hand drawn process than any other software, yet still retains the functionality offered by the addition of computing technology. Tony Buzan has dabbled relatively unsuccessfully over the years with Mind Mapping software but early attempts were clunky, business relationships soured and whilst technology struggled to replicate the ease of use of a piece of paper and a colored pen, his exploration into the digital realm remained just a good idea. A few years ago, Chris Griffiths teamed up with the Buzan Team and iMindMap was born. Early editions struggled to cope with the functionality – version 2 was a joke and version 3 was clunky, difficult to use and frankly quite a let down. Then Version 4.o appeared about 2 years ago and all of a sudden iMindMap suddenly became a force to be reckoned with.

Not only was it easy to use, it had many powerful features and for the first time came close to replicating the hand drawn process. Over the years the Mind Mapping world (yes there is one!) had been divided between the “Hand” and “Software” factions with an ongoing debate about which was better. The diehards tended to stick to their guns which ever stance they took but those with a more pragmatic approach realised both were valuable and had their own unique but complementary advantages. When iMindMap was released, for the first time it seemed that the bridge between the two camps had been crossed, and here was a software that contained the best elements of both.
